Invention ends shattered iPhone screens with self-healing material

Student Accidentally Invents Self-Healing Material to End Shattered iPhone Screens

MAKO Design + Invent – March 22, 2018

When you drop your smartphone and watch it tumble to the floor, cringing as you slowly pick it up, wondering what the fate of its screen is. We’ve all done it, or know someone who has a smashed up phone screen that they walk around with. It makes you wonder how there isn’t an invention out there that solves the problem. However, in an experiment gone wrong by Yu Yanagisawa, graduate students at the University of Tokyo, he may have found a solution.

This new invention will put an end to shattered iPhone screens.

Shattered iPhone screen.

The invention we’ve all been waiting for:

This young unintentional inventor was working on an experiment to develop a new type of adhesive, but instead, he created a low-weight polymer. This invention, when used to make glass, can heal itself. Yes, you heard us correctly! If shattered, you can simply press the broken pieces back together with the pressure of your hand, and voila!

This new creation can completely turn science upside down, and most importantly to the average human, it can completely change fragile devices we use like phone screens. We’ve seen the invention of self-healing rubber and plastics in the past, but what’s even more exciting about this self-healing glass-like substance is that it can be healed at room temperature, meaning anyone can easily fix their broken screen in the comfort of their own home! Yanagisawa is hoping that this new, unexpected invention will be used as a new environmentally friendly material to avoid people needing to throw away broken electronics. Check out the video below for a full explanation of how it works.

Smartphone screens of the past:

Polymer has been used in smartphones in the past, such as LG’s G Flex 2 in 2015, which had a coating that was capable of healing minor scratched but failed to completely repair smashed screens or heavier damage. However, this may not be the end of seeing polymer used in our devices going forward and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
