Ikea Commits to Being Environmentally Friendly With Their Product Design

By January 2020 Ikea plans to eliminate all single-use plastic in their stores across Canada. Why? Because it’s time to put the environment first when thinking about invention design and products.

Ikea's invention design commits to being green.

What you need to know about Ikea’s green invention design commitment:

About single-use plastic

Single-use plastic, like plastic bags, end up in landfills and in our waterways and oceans, harming and killing wildlife and contributing to the negative effects on our environment that have become more and more at the forefront each year. American’s alone use 100 billion plastic bags a year and only 1% of those plastic bags are returned for recycling and all of that unrecycled plastic kills over 100,000 marine animals a year.

It’s obvious we need to change our habits to better our environment, however, it can be hard to do so when all the brands and companies out there utilize single-use plastic in products and invention design. Ikea is changing this with their commitment to green invention design so consumers can feel better about the products they are purchasing.

What Ikea is doing to save the environment

Ikea is committed to people and the planet, and to prove this commitment they are phasing out plastic items offered in their restaurants, bistros, and cafes such as straws, cups, cutlery, plates, and coffee stirrers. Ikea also plans to design new products that generate as little waste as possible with an ultimate goal for all their products to be based on renewable materials by 2030, plus providing services to customers that make it easier for them to take products home.

We’ve been talking a lot at MAKO lately about how designers are approaching the green movement in their invention design. For example, Ovie’s smart food storage system and the evolution we’ve seen to eliminate plastic straws and provide alternatives for consumers to be more environmentally friendly. This only makes us excited because as designers, we need to be on top of not just trends but the shifts and movements that consumers are making and our world needs to make. We can’t wait to see how product design continues to innovate and disrupt the industry to better our environment.
