Tech-Focused Details of Google’s next Smart City
Popularly known as the six, Toronto is getting a new nickname; “The Silicon Valley of the North.” With Google’s new pilot project to turn the city as we know it into Google’s next Smart City, we are about to see a huge change on the Toronto waterfront.
Google Gears Up to Make Toronto Smarter
Sidewalk Labs “is reimagining cities to improve quality of life.” They are teaming up with the city of Toronto and the Canadian Government to bring us Google’s next Smart City. They aim to make Toronto the global hub for urban innovation. What are these new innovations they are implementing you may be wondering? Sidewalk Labs plans to bring in mobility systems, affordable real estate, public plazas and more. Their primary new pilot ideas for the Toronto waterfront are:
- Self-driving technology, digital navigation tools, transit systems at reduced costs
- Flexible building designs, walkable neighbourhoods, reduced cost of housing
- Reduced building energy consumption, landfill waste, carbon emissions
- Climate-positive neighbourhoods, parks, public plazas, self-driving vehicles
- More accessible community hubs with infrastructure innovations
The Future is Now with Google’s next Smart City
Picture it, pedestrians at street level, shopping, mingling on hexagonal pavement tiles that are designed to melt ice in the winter and change colours to alter traffic flow. The Quayside will be booming with floating barges, purely pedestrian bridges, and outdoor projection screens. Thirty-story towers will loom over Torontonians protecting them from the weather with extendable “rain jackets”, to keep outdoor spaces dry.
The future is coming, and Toronto is about to experience it firsthand. Google’s next Smart City is in the works, prepped with detailed renderings, proposals, and construction materials, and we cannot wait to see the next steps implemented into making this major tech vision come to life.
