Alternative Invention Design From Startups: The Plastic Waste War

by | Feb 19, 2019 | Community Initiatives, Design, Industrial Design, Inventions

We’ve all binge watched Blue Planet on Netflix, so this message shouldn’t seem surprising to you. With all the recent news about our oceans containing more waste than water, these startups have developed invention designs to battle this ongoing issue.

Eco-Friendly Invention Design Has Arrived

One problem with product packaging is its lack of symbol indicators. With many products out there, claiming to be biodegradable or compostable, there’s frequently an asterisk next to them. What does the asterisk mean? Essentially that not all components of the packaging are recyclable, compostable or biodegradable. New eco-friendly brands are not staying silent on this worldwide problem. Their invention design alternatives are now, completely recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, and some are even edible.

Compost Design Is the New Black?

One problem with product packaging is its lack of symbol indicators. With many products out there, claiming to be biodegradable or compostable, there’s frequently an asterisk next to them. What does the asterisk mean? Essentially that not all components of the packaging are recyclable, compostable or biodegradable. New eco-friendly brands are not staying silent on this worldwide problem. Their invention design alternatives are now, completely recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, and some are even edible.

Big invention design change is happening in Indonesia as, startup Evoware, a food retailer, is selling ice cream in handmade edible cups made from seaweed. Flavours such as peppermint and green tea are the most popular among consumers. The seaweed is chemical free and sustainably farmed, a nice alternative to one and done plastic. Evoware produces cups as well as other containers like dissolvable sachets for coffee and seasoning. This is a huge step for Indonesia as a country, to get ahead of their marine pollution crisis. As they are the 2nd biggest polluter, behind China.

Invention Design Goes Back to Basics

Another mentionable company is HALO, creating compostable coffee pods for Keurig, which can break down in as little as 4 weeks. Their goal is to do what’s best for the world without compromising the planet’s coffee obsession. With your typical Keurig pods, sitting in landfills for 500 years, HALO chose to do something about such a vast environmental epidemic. No more aluminum and plastic K-cups; check out HALO’s story here.
