A Day at MAKO: Working at a Superior Industrial Design Firm

Exclusive Interview: Rob Colgan, MAKO’s Manager of Design Strategy

February 21, 2019

Our Manager of Design Strategy, Rob Colgan, joined our superior industrial design firm MAKO Design + Invent, back in 2014. Since then, he has been an exceptionally integral and resourceful teammate on each and every project he’s been assigned to.

Rob speaks highly of all of his colleagues and enjoys collaborating on new projects with them and hearing their perspectives. MAKO’s close-knit work space allows collaboration to be conducted quite easily here. Senior designers work next to industrial engineers or electrical engineers alongside mechanical designers. Everyone works together on a project at some point!

Our Manager of Design Strategy Talks MAKO Design

This level of partnership at our superior industrial design firm extends to every client project we take on here at MAKO. As mentioned by our Manager of Design Strategy Rob, in his interview, “when you come to us, you’re not having just one person work on your project, you’re having most of the team contribute to it.”

Superior industrial design firm’s great minds are spread across 3 offices in North America. Although separated by a few hundred miles, to get their input on a project, they’re just a click away.

Rob elaborates, “We also have utilities to get in touch with any staff members at other offices. We do Skype a lot, we do talk to each other a lot on instant messenger. We are just generally collaborating on a regular basis”.

Regularly skyping other offices to go over project details, exchange thoughts and ideas on a client’s project and give input on how something will work are all a part of our superior industrial design firm’s process.

Superior Industrial Design Firm Promotes Diversity in the Workplace

Essentially, by organizing our design process in a collaborative way like this, your product is more likely to be developed in a meticulously thought-out way. Sure, great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ. Which, in short, translates to: if everyone thinks the same way, they may not be so smart after all.

Diversity in education and cultural backgrounds is a huge factor in the success of our superior industrial design firm’s client projects. Our team is comprised of highly knowledgable individuals from all over this big planet, including the United States, Canada, the UK, and South Africa. Really, I could go on. Bringing together employees who think differently can be the difference between a good product and a great product – the kind of product you see on the store shelves, even.
