How Sustainability and Product Packaging Work Together
Within the product packaging realm, both consumers and designers know that packaging can account for a large amount of waste that can be sometimes deemed as unnecessary – which is why design packaging is vital in creating a well-made product! Wellow is a great example of both smart packagings that include sustainable design elements that our California product design consultant loves. The design packaging for this product revolves around the encasing of the product – a natural deodorant. The packaging is made of a paper tube composed of 95% recycled paper, glued together with water-soluble adhesives, and printed with plant-based ink. The whole packaging alongside the nature of the product being sustainable ties in the whole purpose of the product being sustainable and presents the overall purpose of the brand – sustainability. The packaging is not only modern, but bio-degrades along with the deodorant itself, lasting 3 months, making sure that the user remembers to make just as much use out of the product, and allowing users to easily throw out the product without the worry of excessive waste once the product expires.
Edible Product Packaging that Our California Product Design Consultant Loves
With product packaging evolving to better suit our needs – our California product design consultant explains that finding ways to create sustainable packaging has been a new and exciting challenge for designers. As consumers are becoming more conscious of what they are buying – the need to rid of the consumption of single-use plastics has become more popular than ever. The concept of Seaweed U brings a new, innovative, and sustainable approach to product packaging design. The premise of the package design revolves around using seaweed and vegetable extract to create a sheet-like edible wrap. The concept is most suited for packaging food or sweets and looks at completely ridding wasteful plastic packaging around small snacks or food. This way, not only can we decrease the amount of harmful plastic packaging, but also create a more convenient, waste-less, and nutritional solution for the food industry.
A Stylish and Aesthetic Product Design Package
Our California product design consultant not only loves innovative and smart product packaging that serves a purpose in itself but ones that are fun and unique! The product packaging made for this milk product is a great example of how to incorporate a fun and unique design that helps encompass the concept and function of a simple product. The shape, color, and added udder details to the bottle give a stylish new aesthetic to the traditional milk bottle concept. Not only does this packaging design give the milk bottle a new look, but the udders placed on the bottom of the bottle are great for adding stability to the bottle for when one wants to pour themselves a glass of milk. Therefore, not only is this product packaging design unique and aesthetically pleasing but also serves a purpose helpful to the consumer.
Our California Product Design Consultant Recommends Functional Product Packaging Such as This Spaghetti Box!
Combining functionality within the packaging of a product itself can count as a method of bringing a 2-for-1 or “bang for your buck” appeal to product designs. Our California product design consultant explains that there are many ways in which product packaging can be functional in themselves such as (as shown above) sustainable design. This spaghetti box designed by Alesia Lurtcevich is an amazing and intelligent design that lets the user know just the right amount of pasta they need for one full serving. Not only is this helpful for the consumer as it lets them know how much they’re eating (perfect for those looking to document their food intake), but also features an innovative design that stores the spaghetti into small compartments inside the packaging. By simply pressing down and opening each trapezoidal section of the box, you open up one full serving of spaghetti, aiding in portion control!

From design to manufacturing your prototype, research the players involved
If you are hiring a professional design and development firm to create your product, do some research before selecting the firm. This also applies to the manufacturing stage of your product. You may need to work with multiple manufacturers for various parts of your product. Does the factory incorporate alternative sources of energy such as solar or wind into the manufacturing process? Are outputs and waste managed responsibly? Does it take steps to offset the CO2 produced during manufacturing?
