173: Augmented Reality Technology in Hardware Startups
173: Augmented Reality Technology in Hardware Startups

Incorporating augmented reality to bridge the gap between the digital and physical world is the vision of Jonathan Bohun, founder of Action Ship VR and Weedar. On this occasion, Jonathan is poised to impart some valuable insights to inventors, startups, and small manufacturers. His discussion will cover a broad range of topics, including an overview of augmented reality, upcoming opportunities in hardware, and innovative approaches that hardware startups can take to integrate augmented reality into their physical products. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to gain some valuable knowledge on this exciting field.

Today you will hear us talk about:

  • Fully immersing in a digital world defines virtual reality.
  • Augmented reality allows partial immersion in both the digital and real worlds.
  • Wearable devices, such as AR devices, are expected to be the first version of AR technology.
  • The mass adoption of 5G and satellite internet has provided reliable, fast web connections to integrate startup hardware products in a connected way.
  • The processing power needed for AR devices is heavy, but computing power, either on the device or via cloud computing, is now strong enough to handle complex AR calculations.
  • The battery power capacity of devices is now sufficient to handle the complex computing power required for AR technology.
  • Currently, the average AR device offers two hours of experience.
  • Major companies worldwide are investing significant efforts in AR technology.
  • AR technology is advancing beyond just glasses.
  • AR can enhance user experience with products, allowing people to use products together with others.
  • AR can make packaging come to life, enabling interaction with the product and providing information.
  • Customization for different users in selling products on physical display is possible with AR technology.
  • Companies can start learning about AR technology integration into their packaging today.
  • We encourage everyone to explore the possibilities of augmented reality and virtual reality technology to see what it can offer to their hardware products.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • 2:30 – The difference between Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)
  • 2:45 – Virtual reality is fully-emmerced asdfa
  • 3:00 – Augmented reality is a combination of the real visual world overlaid with digital world add-ons
  • 4:00 – As AR hardware has improved, and as new hardware startups are coming into the AR space, there are many opportunities in many different ways for physical product innovations.
  • 5:00 – Wearable devices are going to allow all kinds of innovation in and around augmented reality, and these devices will be the catalyst to providing mass adoption to AR in the real world future.
  • 5:05 – Wearable augmented reality glasses will be the first major hardware adoption.
  • 5:20 – Satellite internet and 5G are creating reliable, stable, and high speed connections from AR devices to the digital world via the internet and connectivity.
  • 6:00 – Processing power is being moved to the cloud to allow fast computing being done in the cloud, then sending the result data to the AR devices.
  • 6:15 – Device battery power is going to be critical, and there will be a lot of battery devices to power AR devices.
  • 7:00 – The biggest tech companies in the world are all working to develop core augmented reality devices, so there will be a lot of accessories and development kits needed.
  • 8:20 – We are just at the tip of the iceberg into AR innovations and devices.
  • 9:30 – AR to enhance the user experience of point of sale displays, packaging, and product information in retail stores or physical spaces.
  • 10:30 – There is going to be a lot of hardware innovation with integrating people together via AR and VR.
  • 12:00 – Packaging is going to start to integrate a lot of AR technology so that you can heavily amplify, colour, explain, etc. with just a QR code on the outside of a package.
  • 15:00 – There are many other layers of AR devices coming beyond just phones and glasses.  Screen projection for video and images will be a big part of future products.
  • 16:00 – Virtual Reality masks are fairly easy things to get your product involved with in terms of Getting into AR/VR with baby steps.
  • 17:15 – There is mass customization coming with this technology where your packaging, as an example, can have a different message each time it is seen, or a custom message directed to a specific type of person that is interacting with your product.
  • 17:15 – People either don’t know about AR or VR because they are scared of it, or they haven’t yet tried to explore it, but at a minimum you should see what options there might be for your product, or how your product could benefit from, augmented reality or virtual reality.
