Humanscale, a design and manufacturing company making ergonomic products for your office has come out with a new invention idea that will change the way you think of office chairs. Smart Ocean is made of recycled fishing net materials—an innovative way to use recycled materials to produce new products.
About Smart Ocean
Smart Ocean is an update to Diffrient Smart task chair created by Humanscale, with a focus on sustainability, Humanscale created this new invention idea that is a chair with two pounds of recycled plastic. The plastic used to produce the chair are sourced from ocean plastic pollution-driven company Bureo. The chair might look like an ordinary chair in terms of design, but the innovative approach to be sustainable not only is helping the world, but also targeting the increasing amount of “green” minded consumers.
About Bureo: creators of the fascinating new invention idea
Bureo, the company in which Humanscale sources their innovative recycled materials from for their brilliant new invention idea creates skateboards from recycled fishnets they retrieve from the coast of Chile. They essentially transform the plastic fishing nets into pellets that can then be used to manufacture various products, and MAKO hopes to see more designers coming out with new invention ideas like this that help the planet.
Why fishing nets?
Fishing nets comprise about 10% of the plastic pollution found in the ocean today. Every year hundreds of thousands of marine animals are harmed because of ocean plastic pollution such as abandoned plastic fishing nets. Unfortunately, nets can survive long after they are discarded which means they can result in unintentionally trapping marine wildlife, birds, and fish, in turn, killing them.
With Humanscale’s goal to achieve a net positive impact on the environment, and being the first recipients of the Living Product Challenge certification, a framework for manufacturers to create products that give back to the environment, we can only expect to see more new invention ideas like the use of the recycled materials in the Smart Ocean chair.
