The Beauty Industry and Product Design | MAKO Design + Invent

How the Beauty Industry is Shaping Product Design Innovation

One of the biggest and fastest growing markets in the past recent years has hands down been the makeup and beauty industry.

With social media mediums such as Instagram, YouTube, and snapchat ramping up marketing and spreading popular trends in makeup, it is not surprise that there have been large successes in the beauty field to which even the most simplest and small designs have reached large and international success.

The key in breaking through in the beauty industry is not only creating something helpful for consumers, but also innovative and fresh – as well as aesthetically pleasing (it wouldn’t be the beauty industry if it wasn’t pretty!)

Sometimes, just a simple redesign to a traditional favorite can also reach major success in this industry.

Here are some of the best inventions and innovations made in the past couple of years that have completely shaken the beauty industry with their simple, effective, and innovative designs.

A Quick Fix for Makeup Junkies

A common problem found with all makeup junkies is that you eventually compile piles of different beauty products. Having an impressive home vanity with a lot of products can seem like a makeup junkie’s dream, but what about when you’re travelling?

Packing your products can seem like a nightmare, and finding the right bag that can fit all the different sizes of your products can almost seem impossible. However, the Lay-n-Go is a simple and extremely helpful product designed for the members of the beauty community with handfuls of different kinds of makeup to pack their items up in in pouch, zip it up, and go.

The pouch comes in a variety of different fabrics and is made out of soft material so that carrying the pouch is light, and the products inside stay safe. The bag is easily transportable too and quick and easy to take a long with you no matter where you’re going.

A Small, Simple and Innovation

This product is the perfect example of how a small and simple idea can reach mass commercial success. Shadow Shields is a small, durable piece of fabric meant to fit under the eyes to catch fall out during eye makeup application.

The focus of this product works by capturing fall out during makeup application, and can be used on the lips as well. The idea for the design of this product leaves good reason as to why it is so popular – it’s multi-functional, time-efficient for makeup artists, and is easy to dispose.

A Quick Clean

One of the best ways to create a useful and successful product is by observing what is most needed by the audience of the market you are aiming for. In terms of the beauty community, a real issue was the amount of time spent cleaning the thousands of makeup brushes that most beauty consumers had.

The makeup company ‘Sigma’ created a handy tool called the SigMagic Scrub that allows users to save their time and money (from buying pricy makeup specific brush cleansers) to just having to swirl their brushes around this portable tool to clean their brushes instantly.

Since the release of this product, thousands have followed in creating similar designs noting the success of the design and construction of this product and its functionality.

Portability in Product Design

If you’re looking for ways to make a simple product idea more appealing to consumers, having your product being portable is definitely a huge advantage when trying to make your idea stand out against competition – especially in an oversaturated and highly competitive market.

The genius behind this idea is that although traditional razors are easy to carry around, the Sphynx Razor is an “all-in-one,” meaning that along with its portable design, the product features water, moisturizer and two razor blades so that the consumer can instantly shave without needing anything else.

This product carries a “more bang for your buck” appeal when marketing to consumers and proves to be convenient since having a portable shaver is important especially for those who like to travel.

Hair Straightening Innovation

If you struggle with ideas on how to create a completely new product, sometimes the best way to create a product is to improve what you already have. In this case, the Dafni Hair Straightening Brush took what most beauty consumers already owned, a hair straightener and combined it with a traditional brush.

This created an innovative product that efficiently straightens and brushes through hair all at once. The product design of this idea is perfect because it’s efficient and reduces the time, that a beauty consumer would take in having to flat iron their hair, and then immediately brushes it after.

Since the release of this product, countless amounts of companies have followed suite in its design, all making their own version, proving the success and ingenious of this idea.
