A Prototype Design Detects Date Rape Drugs

MAKO Design + Invent loves that technology has the capacity to impact lives globally. In product development, there is often a desire to develop a product that can bring about significant changes to a community. Some of these products are specifically designed to solve a reoccurring problem, and often come with great success. Recently, Toronto based scientist David Wilson has created a prototype design that determines if a drink has been spiked with date rape drug or not. Personal Drink ID (PdID) is a device that is the size of a USB drive and is equipped with a drug detection mechanism that gives the user information about whether or not their drink has been infused with unknown chemicals. The device can simply be dipped into any drinks and gives a warning through its LED display. Wilson has spent years on researching cancer imaging technology and has done many tests on women who have been under the influence of date rape drugs. His prototype design was said to detect the chemicals in drinks through three simultaneous tests. By studying the ultra-violet light, temperature and electrical currents of the drink Wilson was able to develop a device that determines substances within a drink.

Benefits of the Prototype Design

The device is planned to be used with a smartphone, where all the information can be accessed easily. The company is also creating a user generated database where places that are frequently visited can be recorded and seen within the app. Females that access the app will be able to see higher drug use areas and are given the chance to prevent unfortunate events from happening. Data about annual sex assaults are rarely publicized as there are many privacy concerns that arise with the release of such information. Female victims that have been assaulted are usually too afraid to report the incident to the police. With the prototype design PdID, female victims will be able to warn each other about the premises that are considered high risk, and given the chance to enjoy themselves safely. MAKO loves to see that our city of Toronto is becoming the center to such ground breaking advancements. We love being a part of a community that is able to develop such cutting edge technology, allowing for a safer and stronger community!
